How to Use Purgatory Project

The purpose of Purgatory Project is to make sure the suffering Holy Souls are not forgotten and to be able to pray and have Masses said for them. Here are the two main ways to use the website to enroll prayers, Masses and Sacrifices for the Souls and to How to Add your own Holy Soul Profile(s) and Pictures:

What you'll learn

  1. How to Log a Prayer or Mass
  2. How to Add a Holy Soul
  3. How to Upload Photos of the Soul

1 How to Log a Prayer or Mass

Once a Soul has a profile, you can offer Prayers and Masses for them. Prayers are free acts you say yourself. Masses are requested through a monastery and involve a donation. Both use the same simple logging interface.

Logging the St. Gertrude Prayer

Go to purgatoryproject.org/prayers?prayer=st-gertrude-prayer. You'll see an accordion list of prayers, ordered by potency (the Holy Mass is most potent).

  1. Click + St. Gertrude Prayer to expand the panel. The + becomes .
  2. Expanded St. Gertrude Prayer panel showing the soul photo, Change link, two checkboxes, and How many? counter
Expanded St. Gertrude Prayer panel — soul on the left, checkboxes and counter on the right.
  3. Look at the Helping this Soul photo on the left of the panel. This is the Soul your prayer will count toward — usually the most recently added Soul.
  4. To pray for a different Soul, click Change. This takes you back to the home page where you can pick any Soul.
  5. Check one of the two boxes:

    ☐ Option A

"I said this prayer or did this act to help this Holy Soul" — credits the specific Soul shown.

    ☐ Option B

"Or apply this prayer or act to ALL Holy Souls" — credits every Soul in Purgatory.

  6. Set How many? If you said the prayer more than once, use the and + buttons to adjust the count.
  7. St. Gertrude Prayer panel with the first checkbox checked and How many? counter set to 3
First checkbox checked and "How many?" set to 3 — a Submit button appears once you check the box.
  8. The action logs automatically when you check the box — no separate save button.
The prayer itself

"Eternal Father, I offer You the most Precious Blood of Your Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the Universal Church, those in my own home, and within my family. Amen."

Logging a Mass

Masses work almost exactly the same way — go to purgatoryproject.org/masses and expand any monastery section (e.g. Pious Union of St. Joseph, Marians of the Immaculate Conception, or I had a Mass said at my local Catholic Church).

  1. Click the + next to the monastery you're using to expand it.
  2. Expanded Pious Union of St. Joseph Mass panel showing soul selector, checkboxes, counter, and Individual Mass/Gregorian Masses tabs
Expanded Mass panel — note the "Individual Mass" and "Gregorian Masses" tabs below the soul.
  3. Confirm the Soul shown, or click Change to pick another.
  4. Choose the Mass type using the tabs: Individual Mass (~$10) or Gregorian Masses (~$300, 30 consecutive Masses).
  5. Mass panel with the Gregorian Masses tab selected and counter set to 2
"Gregorian Masses" tab selected with "How many?" set to 2 — use this for 30-consecutive-day Mass requests.
  6. Check either "help this Holy Soul" or "apply to ALL Holy Souls".
  7. Set the How many? counter and follow the monastery's link to complete payment on their site.
Purification Points

Every Prayer and Mass you log adds to that Soul's Purification Points — tracked across Masses, Prayers, Intentionality, Fast, Indulgences, Almsgiving, Virtues, and Atonement on their profile. Each individual act you do gives the Holy Soul 1 point. And the Holy Soul will not only receive instant relief when you do so but will know it is you that offered the relief because their Guardian Angel reveals it to them in Purgatory (based on Private Revelation).

2 How to Add a Holy Soul

Adding a Soul creates a permanent profile so anyone in the community can pray for them. The form is a short 2-step wizard. Start at purgatoryproject.org/add-soul.

Before you begin Please do not submit children ages 1–4. Only submit one Soul at a time — do not combine multiple names into a single profile.

Step 1 of 2 — Tell us about the Holy Soul

Fill out the profile. Required fields are marked below.

Add a Soul form showing Tell us about the Holy Soul heading with all empty fields
Step 1 form — "Tell us about the Holy Soul" with all fields empty.
Tip

There is no separate "relationship" field. If you want to note that the Soul is your mother, uncle, or friend, include it in the Tell us about them box.

When the form is complete, click the Continue button in the bottom-right to advance to Step 2.

Add a Soul form filled with example data and the Continue button visible in the bottom right
Example completed form — click Continue in the bottom-right to move to Step 2.

3 How to Upload Photos of the Soul

After clicking Continue, you'll land on purgatoryproject.org/add-soul-images. This page is where you add the Soul's photo.

Upload Pics of the Holy Soul page showing example diagram, drag-drop upload area, and photo requirements list
Step 2 page — example diagram at top, drag-drop area in the center, requirements on the sides.
Important This page only works as Step 2 of the Add-a-Soul flow. If you open it directly without first completing Step 1, it will appear blank — start at /add-soul instead.
