Fast

Private Revelation on Purgatory:

Jesus himself explained to Saint Catherine of Siena how to help the poor souls in purgatory: “through alms, Divine office, fasting, and prayers” that “can shorten the time of their sorrow, trusting in my mercy.”

In a vision of Purgatory, St. Frances of Rome describes the exact moment a soul is taken from Purgatory and to Heaven. The souls that had completed their assigned term of penance, repentance and purification. The glorious Queen of Heaven would descend on them on a cloud of golden light. She was robed in a garment of Azure blue which glimmered like sapphire and upon her head she wore a crown of celestial majesty. Her beauty was such that Frances found no words to describe it. Then she takes the soul from purgatory and assigns it to whichever ranks of Heaven that it has merited. And as each soul enters Heaven, there is a glorious rejoicing of all the blessed and all the angels toward these souls.

Fasting is one of our most powerful spiritual weapons for helping a soul gain relief in purgatory. Fasting in reparation for a soul’s sins will help that soul obtain relief from their suffering. For any type of fast that you have never done before and / or you feel may be physically challenging for your level of health, such as a water only fast, consider running this by a Spiritual Advisor or your Priest, Deacon or your physician before doing it. If you feel too weak during the fast, stop fasting immediately.

Absolute fasting restricts both food and liquid. It doesn't allow any fluids, including water, broth, and tea. This is different from most fasts, which encourage water intake. (Note: Should not be undertaken over 3 days and only then if you have a clear directive from the Lord or have approval from your Spiritual Advisor and are in good health).
