Obituary or Eulogy: George M. Chintala, Jr. Obituary George Michael Chintala, Jr., age 82, of Vernon, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Born in Kingston, Pennsylvania on January 28, 1943 to George M. Chintala, Sr. and Angela U. (Pepe) Chintala, he grew up in Exeter, Pennsylvania, before settling in Vernon 62 years ago, where he built a life devoted to family, education, and community. He received a Bachelor of Education degree in 1964 from Wilkes University (formerly Wilkes College) in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and later a Master of Education degree from William Paterson University (formerly William Paterson College) in Wayne, New Jersey. George was an accomplished and dedicated educator for over 30 years. He began as a teacher at Walnut Ridge School in the Vernon School District in 1964. His career soon advanced to serving as the first principal of Rolling Hills Primary School, and later on to become assistant superintendent of Vernon schools. As the district grew, he was integral in building Glen Meadow School from the ground up and led as the first principal there before moving on to again serve in district administration until his retirement in 1995. George leaves a lasting legacy of leadership and commitment to students and educators. He maintained active professional memberships in the NJEA, NEA, NJASA, and various administrators’ associations, and was a founding member of the Vernon Township Education Association. In recognition of his dedication, George was honored with the New Jersey Governor’s Principal Award. A strong advocate for Arts in Education, he was also awarded The Kennedy Center Principals’ Arts Education Award. He was also deeply involved in Sussex County civic organizations, including the Lions Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Always an avid collector, George turned his passion for antiques into a business, opening Toll House Antiques with his wife, Maureen, after retirement. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, tinkering in the garage, and riding his tractor almost as much as spending time with cherished family and friends at their vacation homes in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. George was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard F. Chintala; and his son-in-law, Jeffrey M. Todd. He is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen J. (McGranahan) Chintala; his loving children, George M. Chintala, III (Laurie Marks), Judith A. Chintala-Todd, and Michael J. Chintala (Jennifer Frenia); his five adored grandchildren, Evan and Audrey Todd (Judith), Daniel and Joseph Chintala (Michael), and George Chintala (George); his many dear extended family members and friends; and his precious puppies, Quinn and Bianca. A Memorial Mass will take place Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis de Sales RC Church, 614 County Rd 517, Vernon Township, NJ 07462. Repast will immediately follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Francis de Sales RC Church: P.O. Box 785, McAfee, NJ 07428.
